It was a very eventful and memorable weekend.
We drove to NJ for Varun's 4th birthday party. Interesting and more importantly less stress-fully for us - he slept on the car ride to and fro from NJ.
The other big thing was not having to plan and carry all the baby food with us. His being able to eat regular food was such a blessing.
He also had a blast at Kids Village where the birthday was held. He played in all of the little miniatures. His fav was the grocery store, the baby strollers and the trains.
He actually sat in his high chair, ate pizza, clapped at the right times and in general had a blast.
Now it is back to reality.

Feb 18th Saturday
Okay, I deviated from my normal labeling - but there is a reason for that. On Saturday, for the first time after Abhay was born, we went to a restaurant and sat down and ate as a family and that includes my Gundu. Thanks to the people at Paradise Biryani point.
Granted he did not actually eat ( we gave him his lunch and then headed out), but he was at the table, eating his fruit.
He later watched some George on the IPAD.
We had lunch once before in a restaurant with Abhay in Fremont, the day we were moving (ions ago), but he slept in his car seat most of the time then and so I do no think that counts.
That's my big news for now.

Week of Feb 17th
It has been three wks now since MIL left. It has been tough but we are managing.
I am working part time and I think this is giving me the best of both worlds. I leave around 8 am. This is usually after Abhay is awake and gone through some of his morning routine. Sampath is usually ready or semi ready by then. He finishes getting both of them ready and drops Abhay off at day care around 9. Most days breakfast is at the day care as it is too early for him to eat or he just does not want to.
I pick him up around 1:30. He has finished his lunch by then. We come home, eat a snack as I am eating lunch. Read or try to read a book and then fight not to sleep. He resists sleeping so much be it in the afternoon or at night.
He wakes up and then it is another struggle to get him to drink milk in a sippy cup. The doctor has been telling us to transition to sippy cup since he was a year old. He will drink everything else (juice, water) from a sippy cup but not milk. I have tried so many different kinds of sippy cups that I probably can have an exhibit of my own on sippy cup styles. The hope is he will like one enough to start drinking milk from it.
This is week 3 of the experiment and I can sense a corner being turned here.He drank all of 3 oz yesterday from the sippy cup. This is a huge achievement from the kid who screamed his head off when he saw that the milk was in the sippy cup and not bottle.
Then he plays a little in the kitchen as I prep for dinner. Then it is bath time and ofcourse now bathing involves his favourite pass time - Pouring game. Yesterday I gave him a few disposable glasses and he played pouring game with the glasses, water from the bathing bucket, his bath stool and his soap container for almost half hour. He probably could have gone on for lot longer but I decided to be the spoil sport and give him a bath.
Dinner was chappathi, kurma and yogurt. This was not too bad as he happens to like all of them.
He still wants to eat everything by himself but he is getting much better at it. He can eat rice (mixed very tightly and made into balls) if he wants to or is hungry.
Diet has expanded a little. We have raagi dosa, noodles (without veggies), mac and cheese thrown into the mix. I now see the logic to Shruthi's chart of rotating food.
But I am too lazy to device one and not disciplined enough to stick to one.
His latest thing is he says Hi by waving his hands to everyone he sees. He said Hi to his grandparents and Vijay Chittappa on video chat. He says hi to us when he wakes up. He even said hi to me when I walked out of the bathroom yesterday.

Wk of Jan 20
The latest thing with my son is he wants to play “Tain tain” with everything. This includes Kleenex boxes, Lego sets, stack toys, small cars, and food on his plate that are square pieces.
So, he starts with one piece and then starts putting other peices behind it. Then he uses the last piece to push the whole thing forward. It is more fun if he can push this train off, preferably with a loud noise from a table, bed or some such higher ground.
MIL is leaving early next week. It is going to be a challenge trying to do everything ourselves again. Abhay is also going to miss her a lot as he has gotten very used to having her around.
This whole “I want to eat by myself” phase is driving us all crazy. Trying to find good nutritious food that he can actually eat and not lose between plate and mouth is very challenging. Hi diet now is Bread/waffle/idli for breakfast. Main courses are Kuzhli paniyaram, stuffed parratha (different fillings), dosas (different kinds – pesarrattu, adai, and regular dosa), and ravioli. He will eat fruits depending on his mood. Weekends we experiment in trying to get him to eat rice of different kinds.
This weekend’s trial recipe’s are raagi dosa and All American Mac & Cheese.

Wk of Jan 9th
I get a call on Friday morning asking me to come home immediately as Abhay has hurt his hand.
Happy ending first – Abhay is doing ok.
After the round of doctor, radiology, doctor again we get back home and he is still not moving his hand. I had to reschedule my interview at the FDA (which was very scary as this was an opportunity I was waiting for a long time).
It was heart breaking to see him – he would try to reach for something with both hands but stop mid-way and try and use only his left hand. It was partially physical pain and partially psychological pain. He was so afraid to use his hand. But all is well that ends well. He is ok and back to his "Gunda" ways.
Hubby is was loading the dishwasher and sonny comes running to play with the things in the dishwasher. Spying a knife, hubby shuts the dishwasher quickly by kicking it as his hands were very soapy from the dishes. Son goes away to deal with other stuff. Hubby continues loading the dishwasher, Abhay comes over and in perfect imitation of my husband tries to kick the dishwasher shut. I just could not stop laughing.
Fruit of the week : Pomegranate
Abhay has been eating this for almost 5 days now, pretty much at every meal.

Happy New Year 2012
Happy New Year!!!
Again a very laid back welcoming of the new year - stayed home and watched the times square ball drop on TV and went to bed.
Abhay did not care that we were up late - he woke up at 6:30 rearing to go.
We went to the temple later in the evening. Abhay did not enjoy as much as we were restricting him a lot since it was so crowded.
I think people who talk about the blissfulness of child rearing and the happiness it brings and all that are smoking something and not sharing with the rest of us. Working full time, taking care of the baby and doing all the household chores ( just bare minimum survival stuff) is taking a toll on both hubby and me. We are snapping at each other more, getting irritated at small things and in a bad irritable mood overall. I am re-thinking the whole working mom vs soccer mom debate. I think both of them are tough but in very different ways. More of that to come I am sure as I am trying to work through this.
Back to the grind now.
